The top 10 reasons Americans die

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention released statistics on the leading causes of death for Americans between 2008 and 2009. Most of these aren’t particularly shocking, except for number 10. Despite all the criticism of gun control and violence in American society, it’s surprising that more people actually kill themselves than kill others. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

10. Suicide – 11.7 deaths/100, 000 people

9. Kidney disease – 14.8 /100, 000 

8. Flu and Neumonia – 16.2/100, 000 

7. Diabetes Mellitus – 20.9/100, 000 

6. Alzheimer’s disease – 23.4/ 100,000 

5. Accidents – 37.0/100, 000

4. Brain Diseases – 38.9/ 100, 000

3. Lung disease – 42.2/ 100, 000

2. Malignant neoplasms (Tumors) – 173.6/ 100, 000

1. Heart disease – 179.8/ 100, 000
